The Benefits of Oil Pulling


Oil pulling is an ancient holistic practice, performed by millions of people around the world, including myself! I was introduced to oil pulling a few years ago, and it's a great hygienic routine that you can easily plug into your day to day life. 

Oil pulling has many great benefits including:

  • Removing plaque buildup 
  • Improves the skin
  • Detoxifies the body
  • Balances hormones 
  • Heals bleeding/inflamed gums
  • Strengthens the jaw
  • Heals cracked lips

Oil type

Oil pulling is most famously used with coconut oil, or sesame oil. When choosing your oil type, be sure to also make sure that they are USDA Certified Organic, Fair Trade & Sustainably Sourced. When also choosing a coconut oil, make sure it's unrefined. 

If you are into an Ayurvedic practice, I also advise you you choose an oil base that will balance or work well with your dosha type!

How to oil pull

In the morning, before you brush your teeth or floss, take 1 tsp of your base oil and essential oil, and put it in your mouth. You must never swallow your oil, or spit out the oil in your sink- always grab a paper towel to spit out your oil and then dispose. Swish the oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes, depending on how much time you have. Now is a great time to check your emails, catch up on social media, or have some quiet time alone. After you are done oil pulling, swish some warm water in your mouth and spit in the sink, or jump right into tongue scraping, teeth brushing and flossing. Voila! You just oil pulled, and your body is thanking you!
